Should You Purchase The Subaru Extended Warranty?
Buying a car can be daunting, especially when deciding what to buy and what not to buy. But now that you are buying a Subaru, should you purchase a Subaru Extended Warranty? Is additional coverage to protect you and your car from potentially high costs if something goes wrong the right thing for you?
Standard Subaru Warranties
All new Subaru vehicles come standard with a 3-year, 36,000-mile bumper-to-bumper plus a 5-year, 60,000-mile powertrain warranty. However, this may not be enough for some people who intend to keep their cars for years to come or people who put a lot of miles on their vehicles every year. This is where an extended warranty comes in, or as Subaru calls it, Added Security Extended Service Agreements, which are available in two packages: Classic and Gold Plus.
Extra Powertrain Warranty
The Classic warranty package is more for the powertrain and covers the engine, transmission, axles, cooling, fuel, steering, suspension, brakes, electrical, and air conditioning system. Extra Bumper-to-Bumper Warranty
The Gold Plus package is an added bumper-to-bumper warranty covering mechanical failures throughout the car, including some of the advanced safety technology like blind spot detection, automatic braking, etc. Certain parts that aren’t covered are listed in the contract.
Year and Mileage Range
Customers can choose between two ranges of coverage: 8 years, 120,000 miles, or 10 years, 100,000 miles.
What Do They Cover?
Unlike most warranties, whether factory or aftermarket, these plans even cover some wear and tear items because Subaru considers them to give a “gradual reduction in operating performance.” Another unique feature of the warranties is the fact that they cover “cause and effect” situations. This means that if something on the vehicle fails and causes another part to fail that isn’t normally covered under the warranty, both components will be changed under the warranty coverage. It is very rare for any warranty to cover such situations.
Are There Any Extra Perks?
Both warranties are transferable to another owner if you choose to sell your Subaru. You can choose from a $0 to $100 deductible when your vehicle needs repairs. There are also extra benefits:
- Towing: up to $100 for towing expenses
- Roadside assistance: This covers a locksmith up to $100, gasoline delivery, tire change, battery jump, some minor repairs that can be done where your vehicle is parked, trip routing, as well as lost key return.
- Car rental coverage: Subaru will reimburse you for the cost of a rental car while your vehicle is being repaired under warranty.
- Trip interruption: if you experience a breakdown more than 50 miles from your home, you will be reimbursed up to $500 for food and lodging.
How Much Do They Cost?
What is the cost of these warranties since they seem to be so good? The Classic warranty with a $100 deductible plan will cost $2,370 for 10 years, 100,000 miles of coverage, or $2,610 for the 8-year, 120,000-mile choice. The Gold Plus plan with a $100 deductible will run $3,300 for 10 years or 100,000 miles of coverage or $3,580 for 8 years or 120,000 miles. The Gold Plus plan with a $0 deductible adds an extra $500 to each coverage plan.
So, Should You Buy A Subaru Extended Warranty?
While Subaru vehicles are some of the best and most reliable cars on the market, it is always better to have extra warranty coverage. As our parents used to say, it’s better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it. Besides, the warranty plans can be canceled at any time with full reimbursement of unused coverage.
