Outback Earns Good Rating In New Safety Test

With all the advancements in vehicle engineering, design and technology, it is easy to take safety for granted these days. But all vehicles are not created equal when it comes to safety, especially as safety criteria changes and becomes more strict over time.

For example, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety recently reworked its side-impact safety tests. The new tests are designed to be tougher to pass as a way to better address high-speed, side-impact collisions that continue to cause a number of vehicle collision deaths.

In order for a vehicle to earn a “Good” rating on this test, the cabin must retain its shape rather than collapsing. The test dummies used can also measure impact data, and so any data received from the dummies must not indicate a high risk of severe injury. Lastly, the side airbags and seat belts should do their job of preventing the test dummies heads from significantly colliding with elements within the interior. 

Did Subaru Pass the New IIHS Side-Impact Test?

Recently, the IIHS completed a study of seven midsize cars by putting them through this new test. One of them was the 2022 Subaru Outback.

While all of these seven vehicles received a “Good” rating on the old side-impact test, the Outback was the only midsize car to also receive a “Good” rating on the new test. This is a major accomplishment and adds to the 2022 Subaru Outback current IIHS rating of Top Safety Pick+, the highest possible recognition from the IIHS.
