The new 2026 Subaru Outback has become the vehicle of the moment. The newest version has redefined our most popular model by giving it more interior space, a larger presence, and a new generation of technology features, while maintaining its main mission: to be the vehicle one chooses above all else for seeking adventure. These are the reasons why Autotrader named the 2026 Outback one of its Best New Cars of this year.

The 2026 Outback was one of ten new vehicles selected out of hundreds available for sale. Autotrader’s editors focused on the ones that were “groundbreaking or offer significant value” in their eyes. Selected vehicles must be on sale within the next nine months with a base MSRP of less than $100,000.

Subaru fans should be delighted in this model’s latest evolution.”

What is it about the 2026 Outback that is drawing this kind of attention from new vehicle customers and the automotive media? It starts with a larger interior space. A taller roofline increases not only headroom across the two rows of seats but also a larger, more squared cargo area. There is now 34.6 cubic feet of cargo capacity behind all passengers. That also means your pets will be more comfortable in the back of the 2026 Outback with more space to roam.

You still get 8.7 inches of ground clearance – increased to 9.5 inches on the Wilderness model. You also get a choice of two BOXER engines – a 180-horsepower 2.5-liter naturally aspirated version, and a 260-horsepower 2.4-liter turbocharged one for XT and Wilderness models. The Lineartronic continuously variable transmission and Symmetrical all-wheel drive remain standard, along with the X-MODE Dual Function traction management system.

With a new cabin, there is now improved technology. The driver gets a 12.3-inch fully digital instrument cluster, along with a 12.1-inch center touchscreen display powered by a new architecture that is easier to use and faster to process. The EyeSight Driver Assist Technology has been enhanced with Highway Hands-Free Assist, enabling you to relax while keeping your eyes on the road. This technology can accomplish safer driving with your hands on the steering wheel for speeds up to 85 MPH.

All of this is now available in a desirable package that gives the 2026 Outback new credentials as both an adventure vehicle and everyday practical transportation. This SUV is worthy of being on one of the “best new” vehicles lists you will read about this year.
