Gear Patrol Gives the 2024 CrossTrek an Enthusiastic Endorsement

An Honest Crossover

Amidst a segment of stand-alone models that purport to be different from their brand’s compact cars when they barely are, Gear Patrol gave the CrossTrek kudos for being honest about being a compact hatch given all the mechanicals to make it adept on the non-paved terrain people are likely to take them on. They cite the Crosstrek’s 8.7 inches of ground clearance and short overhangs and found it quite adept at the type of casual off-roading most will encounter. They coined the term E-Z Off-Roading for the X-Mode system’s ability to get the vehicle through specific challenging types of terrain with little skill asked of the driver.

A Focus on the 2.5-liter Engine

Gear Patrol spent their time driving the Crosstrek’s Sport and Limited trims, both of which have the 2.5-liter boxer-4 under the hood. At 182 horsepower and 178 lb-ft of torque.  They obviously preferred this drivetrain, pointing out it has 20% more horsepower and 25% more torque than the base engine. They even mention that the larger engined models are built in Indiana while the 2.0-liter trims are brought over from Japan. 

Meaningful Improvements for 2024

Gear Patrol praised the SUBARU STARLINK 11.6-inch Multimedia Plus system’s updates, pointing out that frequently used features such as the on-off control for the Automatic start-stop system are now readily at hand rather than within sub-menus. They also expressed appreciation for CrossTrek’s physical controls exhibiting annoyance at vehicles that rely too heavily on their touchscreens.

They found the CVT to have significantly less sponginess than other CVTs in the industry but also appreciated the distinct set of ratios made available by the paddle shifters. The steering was lauded for its accuracy and directness. They found the 2024 CrossTrek to driver significantly better than its predecessor, stating: “Not only is it more fun to drive, but it’s quieter — thanks to improved aerodynamics and added sound deadening — and rides wonderfully, soaking up potholes and even speed bumps without compromising handling.”

Gear Patrol’s preference was for the Sport grade, particularly when equipped with the Optional Package, which includes blind spot assist with rear cross-traffic alert, a power driver’s seat, and a moonroof. They preferred this set of features to that of the now similarly priced Limited’s leather seats, navigation, and Harman Kardon stereo. Obviously, others may feel the opposite.
