​IIHS STUDY – Subaru Owners Love DriverFocus Monitoring System​

Safety is one of the leading selling points of new cars, and Subaru is dedicated to engineering and producing the safest vehicles on the road. The company’s latest technology, DriverFocus® Driver Monitoring System, has recently been proven effective in helping drivers. In fact, in a new survey by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), motorists use it a lot of the time when they’re driving, and they say it makes them feel safer behind the wheel.

What Is DriverFocus®? 

Subaru developed DriverFocus® to work alongside Subaru EyeSight® to help drivers who can easily get distracted if they feel tired behind the wheel. EyeSight® works with the help of cameras that can detect and avoid obstacles. DriverFocus®, though, provides visual and audible alerts to warn the driver that their focus is not on the road, thanks to a camera facing the driver as well as infrared sensors. The system can also lower whatever’s being played on the radio to ensure the alerts are heard.  

What The IIHS Study Found 

The IIHS study found that roughly 9 out of 10 Subaru drivers use the safety technology either most or all of the time when driving, and 70% of owners say they want it in their next vehicle. The safety tech has even started to help drivers feel more aware, with 63% reporting that it has helped them avoid being too distracted when doing seemingly simple tasks like adjusting the climate control, radio, or inputting information into the navigation system.

“We do a lot of things behind the wheel almost unconsciously, without thinking that they’re unsafe,” said IIHS Research Scientist Aimee Cox, the lead author of the study. “But those seemingly benign actions can pull our attention away from the road and increase the risk of crashing.” 

Driving While Tired and Distracted Is a Major Problem 

Distracted driving and drowsiness are contributing to more traffic accidents in recent years, with the IIHS saying that they are key contributors in nearly 4,000 fatal accidents since 2023.
