Pastrana, Subaru Motorsports Clinch Championships

December 20th, 2021 by

There’s no stopping Travis Pastrana. He has taken over anything that has to do with rallying and just simple hooning in his Subaru Motorsports USA WRX STi.

With that said, Travis Pastrana secured the 2021 American Rally Association (ARA) overall driver’s championship at the Oregon Trail Rally, with co-driver Rhianon Gelsomino taking the co-driver’s championship.

The 2021 crown represents the fourteenth overall U.S. rally title for Subaru since 2006, as well as Pastrana’s sixth and first since 2017. Subaru teammates Brandon Semenuk and John Hall in the second Subaru Motorsports USA WRX STI rally car took the Oregon Trail overall victory—their first of 2021—and secured third in the driver’s and co-driver’s championships behind the Hoonigan Racing Division WRX STI of Ken Block and Alex Gelsomino.

After that key win, Subaru Motorsports USA took a third consecutive Nitro Rallycross event win with a 1-2-3 podium sweep at Glen Helen Raceway. Travis Pastrana in the #199 WRX STI earned his second straight victory, with teammate and fellow championship contender Scott Speed taking second in the final. Andreas Bakkerud, returning for his third outing of the five-round NRX season, picked up his best finish of the year to round out the podium in third. Pastrana and Speed now own the top two positions in the inaugural NRX driver’s championship and three out of the four race wins so far, with Pastrana leading Speed by seven points with two wins to his teammate’s one.

To top that off, Subaru Motorsports USA took a 1-2 finish in the 2021 Nitro Rallycross driver’s championship and secured the Nitro RX teams championship at the season’s final round in Florida, as Travis Pastrana and Scott Speed finished the year in a thrilling tie at the top of the standings with 219 points each, one point clear of Timmy Hansen with 218. Pastrana was crowned overall champion on the tiebreaker with two event wins to Speed’s one. Together with Pastrana’s American Rally Association championship, Subaru Motorsports USA became the first team to win the American rally and rallycross titles in the same year.

It was a great season for Pastrana and the Subaru Motorsports USA team. And, there’s more to come for 2022!
