Solterra, WRX Earn IIHS Top Safety Pick

December 20th, 2024 by

Subaru continues to dominate as one of the safest vehicle lineups in America. You can now add that the Solterra EV has earned the Top Safety Pick + designation from the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety. In addition, the WRX sports sedan also earned a Top Safety Pick award from IIHS.

In 2024, IIHS instituted new requirements in side impact protection, pedestrian crash prevention, and moderate front overlap tests. These tests are essential in determining vehicle impact and occupant safety. The pedestrian test also shows response and impact to protect both the vehicle and the pedestrian.

Both the 2024 Solterra and WRX achieved a ‘Superior’ rating in pedestrian front crash prevention.

Subaru has earned more IIHS Top Safety Pick + awards than any other brand since 2013. Of the current models available, the 2024 Solterra joins the Ascent three-row SUV in earning this award. The Ascent has earned this designation for four consecutive years.

The 2024 WRX joins the Impreza and Outback as Top Safety Pick award winners for Subaru. The Impreza has won this award for 17 consecutive years, while the Outback earned this award for 16 years in a row. What makes the difference in achieving these awards? In the case of the 2024 WRX, it is the inclusion of the EyeSight® Driver Assist Technology, now standard on all models, including WRX models equipped with manual transmissions.

The Solterra EV is also equipped with EyeSight® Driver Assist Technology. This includes features such as Active Lane Change Assist, Front Cross-Traffic Alert, Blind Spot Monitors, Rear Camera Detection with Pedestrian Warning, Dynamic Radar Cruise Control with Lane Tracing, and Road Sign Assist. Solterra EV owners can also get the DriverFocus® Distraction Mitigation System, which also helps to keep all occupants safe on the road.

While they are entirely different models, the WRX and Solterra EV share one other thing: how they are constructed. Crumple zones are built into the front portion of each vehicle, with the engine/front electric motor and transmission designed to detach from the subframe away from the impact.
