Subaru Announces 2026 Crosstrek Hybrid

The Crosstrek model is many things. It is Subaru’s best-selling model. It is Consumer Reports’ most reliable sub-compact SUV, a TOP SAFETY PICK by IIHS, and has had the Best Resale Value in its class for six years in a row according to Kelley Blue Book. It is generally praised by automotive journalists around the country. However, it isn’t available as a hybrid—but that is about to change. Ewing Subaru of Plano is proud to announce that there will be a Crosstrek Hybrid for the 2026 model year. 

The series-parallel hybrid system will accommodate everything people love about the Crosstrek drivetrain. That means it will use the existing 2.5-liter BOXER four-cylinder engine modified with Atkinson/Miller cycle valve timing for greater efficiency. It will be combined with an electric motor generator and an electric traction motor. The motors will interact with a 1.1-kWh high-capacity, sealed lithium-ion battery. As is the case with the current Crosstrek, the engine and hybrid system will be paired with a continuously variable transmission and the Subaru Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system. 

The drivetrain is rated at 194 horsepower. The hybrid system can use just the electric motor, just the gas engine, or both as needed. Fuel mileage figures are not available at this point. Like all current models, the Crosstrek Hybrid will be equipped with X-MODE, Hill Descent Control, and retain its 8.7 inches of ground clearance (which is more than even significantly larger SUVs).  

The Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid will be available with a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster with navigation and Apple Maps compatibility, in addition to the current Subaru Starlink 11.6-inch center touchscreen that is accompanied by wireless Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™.  

The Crosstrek Hybrid will also be available with a new safety system known as Emergency Stop Assist, which works with the Advanced Adaptive Cruise Control system. If the driver becomes unresponsive to warnings while using Adaptive Cruise Control, the system will stop the vehicle, activate the hazard lights, and unlock the doors. Subaru Connected Services will then place a call to emergency services. 

The hybrid will have the same exterior styling as the current model but will be equipped with exclusive 18-inch dark gray alloy wheels. It will also introduce two new exterior colors called Sand Dune Pearl and Citron Yellow Pearl.  

It is unclear if the new safety system and colors will be exclusive to the hybrid models or be added to the general Crosstrek model line. Pricing, trim levels, fuel mileage, and other specifications will be announced closer to its on-sale date, which is expected in the fall of 2025.
