2024 Subaru Ascent Model Review
Subaru’s catalog is packed with capable vehicles ready to take drivers well off the beaten path. However, there was a period when the automaker lacked a three-row family hauler in its catalog. That changed in 2019 with the introduction of the Subaru Ascent, the company’s largest vehicle. We reviewed the updated 2024 model, so let’s take a closer look at what makes the big Subaru tick.
2024 Subaru Ascent Performance
The Ascent comes standard with a turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine, making 260 horsepower and 277 pound-feet of torque. That output hits all four wheels through a continuously variable transmission and Subaru’s excellent symmetrical all-wheel drive system. Though modestly powered, the Ascent is capable and more than quick enough for daily commutes and light trail driving. The continuously variable transmission works smoothly, and the SUV’s suspension system keeps everything in check on rough roads.
2024 Subaru Ascent Interior
Subaru offers two seating configurations in the 2024 Ascent: an eight-passenger version with a second-row bench seat and a seven-passenger variant with second-row captain’s chairs. Both configurations have ample space for the whole family and their gear, though the third-row seats are best reserved for children or shorter trips. Cloth upholstery comes standard, but top trims add genuine leather and heating/ventilation for the front seats.
Cargo space is above average for the Ascent’s segment, with 17.8 cubic feet behind the third row, 43.5 behind the second row, and 75.6 with the seats folded flat. The SUV’s interior quality is top-notch, and there is a good mix between rugged-feeling plastics and soft-touch surfaces.
2024 Subaru Ascent Tech
Subaru equips an 11.6-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™, Bluetooth, SiriusXM radio, HD radio, and more. The top trims get a Harman Kardon sound system and additional USB ports. The Starlink infotainment interface runs well on the large display and brings plenty of great features. All vehicle controls are centered on the touchscreen, including the climate system, auto start-stop, and lighting options.
2024 Subaru Ascent Safety
The 2024 Ascent earned a Top Safety Pick+ designation from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and five stars overall from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Standard safety tech includes forward collision warnings, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warnings, lane keep assist, automatic high beams, adaptive headlights, and rear-seat alerts. Available features include blind spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alerts, reverse automatic emergency braking, driver attention alerts, lane change assist, and a rearview camera mirror system.
