Subaru Brings Home Four IIHS Top Safety Pick Awards

There is currently no other car brand in the world that has more Top Safety Pick awards than Subaru. Seventy-one models since 2013 have received a Top Safety Pick designation by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, making Subaru one-of-a-kind. And they have done it again with new 2024 crash test ratings. 

Multiple Consecutive Top Safety Pick Awards

For the seventh consecutive year, the 2024 Subaru Ascent received the Top Safety Pick+ award, while the Impreza, Outback, and Solterra all are Top Safety Picks, which is 17, 16, and 2 years in a row, respectively.

What Is The IIHS?

The IIHS was founded in 1959 by three different insurance companies. Over the years, they have evolved to conducting and studying car crashes, even revolutionizing the testing that new cars endure to see how good they are in the event of an accident.

IIHS Crash Test Changes

For all 2024 model-year cars, the IIHS has updated some of their crash tests and the corresponding ratings. The moderate overlap crash test now adds a dummy behind the driver to bring more attention to rear seat safety. Another change is combining the driver and passenger side collision tests into one rating. Also, in order to qualify for a Top Safety Pick or TSP+, a vehicle must do better with its front pedestrian crash prevention in either day or nighttime tests. In previous years, a vehicle could be awarded as a Top Safety Pick without scoring well in pedestrian accident prevention.
