Subaru Celebrates Its Six Millionth Vehicle Built in Indiana

September 5th, 2025 by

For 38 years, Subaru has produced vehicles at its Lafayette, Indiana, plant. Known as Subaru of Indiana Automotive, it is the only production facility they operate outside of Japan. In fact, this production facility has built about half of all Subarus sold in North America.

On June 25 this year, SIA produced its six millionth Subaru vehicle – a 2025 Legacy Limited in Cosmic Blue Pearl. It rolled off the assembly line just at the start of the first shift in Lafayette.

The significance of this moment is important for our history. This model year marks the final production run for the Legacy sedan. As the first vehicle built at the Indiana plant, our sedan has reached 1.3 million happy owners with its space, performance, efficiency, and award-winning safety. It has been doing so since September 11, 1989.

At that time, the Indiana plant produced both the sedan and wagon versions of the Legacy. The wagon would serve as the basis of another volume seller for Subaru – the Outback. From its inception, almost all Outbacks sold in the U.S.A. were produced in Lafayette. They were Subaru’s best-selling model for years.

The Indiana plant also produces the Crosstrek. The popularity of our smallest crossover calls for adding more capacity to the Indiana plant, delivering all trim levels for customers who crave a smaller and more capable vehicle with standard Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive.

The three-row Ascent was a natural choice for production in Indiana. Families across North America want SUVs with plenty of passenger space for up to seven people. Subaru delivered and provided them with a choice that offers everything they want in a mid-size SUV for our loyal customers.

This fall, the Indiana plant will add the Forester SUV, supplanting the Legacy. The Forester Hybrid will join the Lafayette assembly line next spring. The demand for our award-winning SUV has been very high. To meet your needs, we will finally offer these popular models from this American facility.

Last year, the Outback, Crosstrek, and Forester accounted for three-quarters of all Subaru sales in the U.S.A. Our ability to produce all of these vehicles at our Indiana plant by the middle of 2026 cements our commitment to our customers. That includes offering greater value with confidence, backed by a strong track record of providing high-quality vehicles to you.
