Subaru Outback Wins Rebelle Rally Class

The Rebelle Rally's Winner, The Subaru Outback

The Rebelle Rally is one of the most intensive off-road vehicular competitions in America. It blends the love of driving with the ultimate challenge of precise navigation. The all-women rally was developed to test the skills of teams over eight days of competition through 2,500 kilometers of California and Nevada deserts.

The Rebelle is truly a mentally demanding event based on the elements of headings, hidden checkpoints, time, and distance using maps, compass, and roadbook. No technology (such as phones and GPS devices) is allowed during the competition.

However, driver Carey Lando and navigator Andrea Shaffer showed no fear. They put an off-road modified 2014 Subaru Outback on the ninth running of the rally. In the end, Lando and Shaffer took the top podium of the 2024 Rebelle Rally in the X-Cross Class. Team #204, also known as MtnSubi, accomplished this feat with 1,176 points—77% of all possible points to be earned. Lando and Shaffer are Rebelle Rally veterans. Shaffer ran in the first rally back in 2016, and Lando ran her first Rebelle in 2021.  The Fearless Carey Lando And Andrea Shaffer, Winners Of The Rebelle Ralley

This was not only the first win for Subaru in the rally, but it was also Subaru’s first factory-sponsored team. The 10-year-old Outback, backed by Subaru of America, was supported by other sponsors: TORQ-Masters Industries, iKamper, Milestar Tires, RaceWorks Coilovers, Anderson Design & Fabrications, Diode Dynamics, Scrubblade Wipers, Spiked Performance, B.stubbs Vinyl & Graphix, RalliTek Performance, Freedom Recovery Gear, DirtComplex, Goose Gear, Wavespec Rotors, Mele Design Firm, JXB Performance, Wagan Tech, OnX Offroad, The Klean Freak, Prinsu Racks, DMOS Collective, and MACC Creations.

Putting a 10-year-old modified Subaru Outback into a challenging rally over rough terrain for over 1,500 miles may seem daunting. It does prove one thing—a Subaru’s durability. If you are thinking of taking an older Subaru on a challenging run—somewhere in the open plains of West Texas, for example—you can. Anyone can! Models such as the Outback, Forester, and Crosstrek already come with higher ground clearance than a lot of other vehicles in their respective classes. As you have already seen, there are plenty of parts—available through the Ewing Subaru of Plano’s parts department and through third-party sources—that can help you modify your older Subaru into the ultimate adventure machine.
