Subaru is on a roll, introducing some of the best models it has ever built. Not only did the company just release the all-new 2025 Forester and brand-new 2026 Forester Hybrid models within months of one another, but it was roughly a year ago that the more off-road-ready Wilderness trim debuted. Now, for the 2027 model year, Subaru is introducing the first-ever hybrid model to wear the ultra-capable Wilderness badge.

A Hybrid Off-Road Vehicle

This is a big deal for multiple reasons. A hybrid is supposed to be a subdued, relaxed vehicle meant for fuel efficiency, not tearing up and down mountainous terrain. But the 2027 Forester Wilderness Hybrid aims to be the best at both worlds: a quiet, comfortable, fuel-sipping SUV by weekday and a powerful off-road tool by weekend. Of course, like most Subaru models, the Forester Hybrid Wilderness comes standard with Subaru Symmetrical all-wheel drive.

The Wilderness Isn’t Just a Fancy Name

What makes the Wilderness so special is its increase of ground clearance over the standard Forester from 8.7 to 9.3 inches, which is also what the Wilderness Hybrid offers. Wilderness models achieve this thanks to longer springs and shocks. Further, the Wilderness Hybrid offers greater off-road angles than standard Hybrid models, with an approach angle of 23.5 degrees vs 19, a 20.6-degree breakover angle vs 19.3, and a departure angle of 25.5 degrees vs 24.6.

Powering The Forester

Non-hybrid Forester models feature a 2.5-liter flat 4-cylinder engine that produces 180 horsepower and 178 lb-ft of torque. However, Forester Hybrid models pair a lithium-ion battery with electric motors to the engine, delivering a total of 194 horsepower. All models feature a Lineartronic CVT that helps improve fuel efficiency while maintaining good performance. The X-MODE Dual-Mode System with Hill Descent Control helps control the Hybrid Wilderness on any terrain, especially with the Snow/Dirt and Deep Snow/Mud driver settings. And the all-terrain Yokohama Geolander tires ensure maximum grip in all driving conditions.

EPA Fuel Economy

The EPA estimates that the standard Forester achieves 26 mpg in the city and 33 mpg on the highway, while the Forester Wilderness achieves 25 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway. Hybrid Forester models have an EPA estimated 35 city and 34 highway. While Subaru has not yet announced the final fuel mileage for the Wilderness Hybrid, the company says it will be around 25% better than the pure gas Forester Hybrid.

Cargo Capacity

All Forester Wilderness Hybrid models have an 800-lb. static load roof capacity, 27.5 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats, and 69 cu.ft. when the seats are folded flat.
