​​Taking a First Drive in the 2026 Subaru Outback Wilderness​

The all-new 2026 Subaru Outback may have grown, but a lot of things have not changed. It sticks to an essence that has attracted a loyal set of owners for 30-plus years. For those of you who love adventure, Subaru still proudly offers the Outback Wilderness for 2026. It provides the same enhanced off-road capability with expanded practicality.

The Wilderness model embraces a larger cabin and cargo hold within a new SUV’s exterior design. A two-inch increase in overall height translates into a taller cargo area and improved headroom for both front and rear. In fact, the rear tailgate area is now more upright than before, giving your pets more room to roam without any discomfort.

The driver’s area is also ergonomically improved, with a new 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and upgraded materials throughout the interior. Spacious seating for up to five people makes the 2026 Outback a comfortable vehicle overall.

Technology was also upgraded with a new infotainment system featuring a 12.1-inch touchscreen and Harmon Kardon speakers. Every Outback is equipped with standard EyeSight Driver Assist Technology.

The Wilderness trim adds a more rugged look to go along with its added agility. The front end integrates an aggressive grille with added protection, while additional cladding runs along the sides and on the rear bumper. A tougher roof rack gives you the strength to camp away from the roadside.

It also stands 9.5 inches above the surface, enabling the 2026 Outback Wilderness to traverse uneven terrain without issue. A new set of electronically controlled dampers helps smooth out the ride on and off the trail. It also comes with a set of 17-inch alloy wheels with all-terrain tires for improved grip.

The 260-horsepower 2.4-liter turbocharged BOXER engine powers the 2026 Wilderness. With 277 pound-feet of torque, that power is delivered through a Lineartronic continuously variable transmission with revised gearing. Standard is the Symmetrical all-wheel-drive system with a dual-mode X-MODE, adding more control on various surfaces. That includes. A setting for Mud and Deep Snow, maximizing traction through rougher terrain.

In a recent first drive, the CarBuzz website concluded their time with it by saying, “after all, Subaru practically invented rugged, go-anywhere station wagons, and the 2026 Outback Wilderness is just another notch in the belt.” That goes for the new, larger SUV design with its adventurous soul.
