The 2025 Subaru Forester’s Cargo Hold Outperforms Its Specs

With abundant practicality and versatility, the 2025 Subaru Forester sets the standard for cargo management. They always say that looks can be deceiving. Subaru states in its specifications that the 2025 Forester can carry up to 29.6 cubic feet behind the rear seats. However, Edmunds.com found that it could carry more than numbers alone suggested. Its editors said that “quite simply, the Subaru Forester’s cargo area is not as small and uncompetitive as its volume suggests. Quite the opposite.” 

Edmunds.com executed a non-scientific cargo test by using various pieces of luggage to get a real-world view of what the cargo hold could carry without any seats folded down. Its first load into the cargo hold consisted of two Pullman-type pieces of luggage, three carry-on roll-aboards, and a medium-size duffle bag. The result was a lot of “extra space. This is the first hint that there’s way more space here than other vehicles with cargo volumes in the upper 20-cubic-foot range.” Even better, the editors were able to see out of the back glass without any intrusion and with the removable cargo cover closed.  

They were not finished. The Edmunds.com team added more articles to what was already loaded inside the cargo hold, including a 38-quart cooler and two other duffle bags. They were able to fill the area up to the rear-seat backrests. With some rearranging and by placing the cargo cover in its compartment underneath the floor, they were still able to see out of the rear window. 

Part of this test was experiencing the real-world usage of the cargo space behind the rear seats. It is worth noting that with the cargo cover retracted, the cargo hold is a tall space. Folding down the rear seats results in a cargo space of up to 74.4 cubic feet, which is among the largest in its class.  

While Edmunds.com did not test this, the 2025 Forester is a pet-friendly SUV. Larger dogs will find comfortable, spacious, and open areas to roam and rest. There is room to load large-sized pet carriers or kennels. Even larger dog breeds can enjoy the space behind the rear seats of the 2025 Forester.
