Updated Solterra Brings Welcomed Revisions

The 2024 Subaru Solterra isn’t just another EV SUV that’s looking to create market share for a vehicle that isn’t all that special. No, it has the real off-road prowess and chops of other Subaru SUVs. A recent test by Green Car Reports highlighted the fact that Subaru has engineered a genuinely good SUV for those who like to venture off into the parts unknown.

Bengt Halvorsen, the journalist who tested the Subaru for Green Car Reports, specifically wanted to test the Solterra on trickier grounds and came away saying, “Like most other Subarus, the Solterra has lots of ground clearance. Its 8.3 inches is an inch or two more than most other electric crossovers with its exterior dimensions, and it could make a big difference in whether you get out of that uncleared winter driveway without high-centering. Conditions permitting, you can also turn off all the traction systems if and when you want, allowing fast and loose driving that favors power to the rear wheels.”

Faster Charging Speeds For All!

For 2024, Subaru upgraded the EV SUV to feature faster charging speeds capable of giving owners the ability to charge from 10% to 80% in just 35 minutes on a Level 3 DC fast charger. The manufacturer has also tweaked the battery conditioning to make sure it charges faster and more reliably during colder parts of the year. The base Premium trim has 228 miles of range, with the Limited and Touring models having 222 miles of range due to their standard 20-inch wheels.

All-New Safety Features

This year also sees new advanced safety equipment added to the already safety-rich systems. The safety features include the Subaru EyeSight advanced driver-assistance system allowing hands-free driving up to 25 mph, including stop-and-go traffic. With Active Lane Change Assist, the Solterra can change lanes on command, and the Front Cross-Traffic Alert system makes it even safer and easier to avoid potential accidents when pulling out into an intersection. More safety features include Blind Spot Monitors, Rear Camera Detection with Pedestrian Warning, Dynamic Radar Cruise Control with Lane Tracing and Road Sign Assist, and the all-new DriverFocus Distraction Mitigation System.

X-Mode and Grip Control Are Amazing

Quite possibly the icing on the cake (that is the Solterra) is X-Mode with Grip Control. As Mr. Halvorsen explains, “Between its Eco, Normal, and Sport modes, throttle sensitivity seems to be the main difference, but for this course I opted for X-Mode, which Subaru has carried over from its gasoline vehicles. The Solterra doesn’t find its traction like a Forester or Outback, though, and so I noted that X-Mode here was tuned for finesse—in a way that shows off the precision that can be dialed into EV propulsion. It even includes a Grip Control feature that will maintain a set, very low, off-road speed, all with near zero tire slip … this is the trail-oriented cruise control Subaru owners need.”

An IIHS Top Safety Pick+ Winner
