Eight new and used Subaru models were recognized as Top Choices for teen drivers. Among those chosen are four 2023 models: the Ascent, Forester, Legacy, and Outback. Each is ranked as an IIHS Top Safety Pick+, the highest safety rating according to the institute. In order to receive such high ratings, each vehicle is put through a series of crash tests to determine crashworthiness in a variety of categories. That’s just one part of why the IIHS and Consumer Reports recommends Subaru vehicles for teens, though. Each vehicle is scored in areas of reliability, value, emergency handling, and insurance claim rates as reported by consumers.

You don’t have to buy a new vehicle to get a safe pick for your teen, either; 46 used Subaru vehicles were recommended by the IIHS and Consumer Reports for new and teen drivers across four models. The 2018 and 2022 Impreza, 2013-2021 Legacy, 2015-2018 and 2022 Outback, and 2018 or newer Forester models were all recommended by the duo as highly suitable for the teen driver. Subaru has received more IIHS Top Safety Pick+ awards than any other brand since 2013, with a total of 69 titles over those years. In addition to that, Consumer Reports has named Subaru as the best automotive brand, awarding the Forester as their Top Pick for ten years in a row.
