Are there different types of Electric Vehicles on the market?
Almost every automaker on the market, if not all of them, is electrifying their lineup to some degree. Many of them, in fact, have committed to going completely electric by a certain year. So, not only are electric vehicles the future, but they’re very much the present as well. There are all kinds of electric vehicles on the market already today, and while those commitments we just mentioned were largely focused on battery electric vehicles, those aren’t the only types on the market. In fact, the reason we already have so many electric vehicles available today, is because one of the EV types is the hybrid electric vehicle. Did you know that?

Hybrid Electric Vehicles
There are four different types of electric vehicles overall, and the oldest among them is the hybrid electric vehicle. HEVs, or simply hybrids, are unique due to combining an electric motor with a traditional engine. You might not immediately picture them when you think of EVs, but they are. And the second type of EV also fits under their umbrella, and that’s the plug-in hybrid electric vehicle. These take one step closer to true BEVs by combining the electric motor and conventional engine with a battery that can be plugged in and charged by electricity.
Battery Electric Vehicles
While they haven’t been around as long, these are what you might call the true electric vehicles. They run entirely on electricity, without a conventional engine at all. They combine a series of electric motors with a battery pack that can be charged by plugging into a circuit of some kind or another.
Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles
Finally, we have FCEVs. These are unique and have actually been around for more than a decade, but due to their need of a unique refueling method, they aren’t as widespread as others. They’re powered by fuel cells that convert hydrogen directly into electricity, requiring that chemical instead of charging at home.
