Buffalo Bills Running Back Khalil Shakir Still Drives His 4-Year-Old Subaru

May 10th, 2025 by

One thing Ewing Subaru of Plano is happy for everyone to know is that Subaru is recognized as one of the top non-luxury brands for consumer loyalty. In fact, among SUV owners, it ranks second among non-luxury brands with a loyalty rate of 62.5%, according to a 2024 J.D. Power study. This figure measures the percentage of owners who stay with the same brand when purchasing a new vehicle. Subaru also ranks among the three highest brands whose owners retain their cars for the longest duration. According to iseecars.com, Forester leads Subaru in this regard, with 9.8% of owners keeping their vehicle for 15 years or more, which is 1.6 times the average.

Unfortunately, there isn’t a study of people who keep their old cars after receiving a financial windfall that has everyone expecting them to drive something new and fancy. If there ever is, Buffalo Bills wide receiver Khalil Shakir could be a case study. He has chosen to keep driving his 4-year-old Subaru after receiving a big contract extension worth $60.2 million across four years.

Khalil Shakir

Yes, this is a Subaru blog post, but let’s face it. How many of us, after securing $15 million a year for the next four years, wouldn’t consider visiting our sister dealer, Ewing Mercedes-Benz of Plano? Are there no Porsche dealers in Buffalo?

Shakir referenced his Subaru at the press conference, announcing his lucrative contract extension. “I’m gonna put myself on blast here a little bit, but I drive a Subaru,” He said, adding later, “The guys always make fun of me for what I drive.”

Shakir didn’t say what kind of model he has, only that it is a 2021 model that is white with tinted windows. Now, we would be the first to say that driving a Subaru is nothing to be ashamed of, but it probably does stand out in the Buffalo Bills player parking lot among all the other luxury SUVs and high-end sports cars.

When asked if he plans on getting a new vehicle, Shakir responded, “I don’t really splurge much; that’s not really what I like to do. But, yeah, I’ll probably go get a new car, but it’s not going to be anything crazy.”

Shakir did show that he may be in a little better position than many new car purchasers by stating that even if he does buy a new car, he plans to hold on to his Subaru. “I actually don’t think I want to get rid of it. Maybe just drive something else in here every now and then just so [teammate Curtis Samuel] sees and he doesn’t make any more jokes.”

Yes, peer pressure remains real, even in professional football. So, while the next time we hear from Shakir, he might arrive in a luxury brand SUV to keep from being teased, we still suggest that he keep it in the family. The Outback Touring XT offers a nice Nappa leather interior, and its 260 horsepower is nothing to sneeze at. Or he could enjoy the spacious cabin of the Ascent, which looks fantastic with the Java Brown leather interior. Both models feature the solid, Symmetrical Subaru all-wheel drive system that easily handles anything the Buffalo, NY, winter can throw at it.
