Crossover vs. SUV

At first glance, crossovers and SUVs appear identical. In fact, the automotive industry often uses these terms interchangeably. However, if you take a step closer, there are a few technical differences between the two vehicles. We’ll walk you through these distinctions and help you decide which body type is right for your lifestyle.

A Crossover Utility Vehicle (CUV), often referred to as a “car-like SUV,” is a cross between a mid-sized car and an SUV. This cross is attributed to its unibody chassis, or car-like frame, as seen in the Subaru Forester. Alternatively, a traditional Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) is built on a body-on-frame, similar to trucks. Most manufacturers, including Subaru, have shifted to crossover SUVs as their unibody design is proven to be smoother and safer than body-on-frame vehicles.

Gas Mileage

When comparing CUVs and SUVs, crossovers are lighter and have smaller engines. SUVs are more powerful and able to tow heavier loads. However, with much power comes a lower fuel economy, making crossovers a better option for gas mileage.

Size and Space

You can also distinguish CUVs and SUVs by their size. While both vehicles can seat seven passengers, the longer and taller SUV offers more leg room and cargo space. While crossovers don’t provide as much space, they offer the comfort of a smaller vehicle with a ride height slightly higher than a sedan or coupe.

Off-Roading

When it comes to tough terrain, crossovers and SUVs are built differently. Due to their truck-like body types, SUVs have the ability to drive through mud, snow, or other challenging conditions. In addition, SUVs often include AWD or 4WD, drivetrains that are better suited for off-roading.
