AWD vs. 4WD vs. 2WD – Which is Best for You?
3 Types of Drivetrains and Why They Matter
If you’ve been car shopping for any amount of time, you have probably seen the terms, AWD, 4WD, and 2WD. But how do they work and what’s the difference? Two-Wheel Drive (2WD)
The key difference between each system is how many wheels are turning at once. Two-wheel drive, commonly abbreviated as 2WD or 4×2, is the most common type of drivetrain found in vehicles. 2WD drivetrains deliver all power from the transmission to either the front or rear wheels, while the other two wheels are left to spin.
Most cars are equipped with a front-wheel drive system as it’s safe, easy to control, and great for climbing hills. Rear-wheel drive is most common for sports cars, such as the Subaru BRZ, as it allows for greater speed and power.
Four-Wheel Drive (4WD)
The four-wheel drive system, also known as 4WD or 4×4, sends power to all four wheels. A 4WD, most commonly found in trucks, can also switch to a 2WD, giving owners the best of both worlds. Some 4WDs automatically shift to 2WD, while others require the driver to manually toggle between modes.
All-Wheel Drive (AWD)
An all-wheel drive (AWD) vehicle, such as the Subaru Forester, is a type of four-wheel drive that automatically sends power to all four wheels at once. Unlike the 4WD, this automated system is always on. Depending on the road condition and speed, the AWD system may send power to just the front or rear wheels, allowing for extra traction and control.
Which Drivetrain is Right For You?
For the Penny Pinchers
On a budget? Standard two-wheel drive vehicles, like the Subaru BRZ, offer the best bang for your buck. They also offer the best gas mileage, so you can keep saving even after you take home your 2WD.
For the Off-Roaders
For all the adventurous spirits out there, a four-wheel drive is your new best friend. Because power is delivered to all four wheels equally, 4WD can take on the toughest terrain, including gravel and boulders. They’re also great for towing heavy loads.
For the Beach Bums
If you enjoy beach trips or snowy destinations, an all-wheel drive may be right for you. If one wheel begins to slip on icy or sandy roads, the car will then deliver power to that wheel so you can remain in control of the vehicle. AWD is also great for other sloppy conditions, such as mud. Most Subarus at Ewing Subaru of Plano include an AWD drivetrain.
Whether you plan to drive on flat Texas roads in a powerful rear-drive sports coupe or drive off the beaten path in the symmetrical all-wheel drive Crosstreck Hybrid, Ewing Subaru of Plano has a wide selection of AWD and 2WD Subarus for your next adventure.
