What Does Subaru Add to its Wilderness Vehicles?
So, if Subaru gives the Crosstrek a Wilderness badge, what will that mean exactly? Well, simply put, the Subaru Wilderness vehicles have lots of added features and accessories, many of which are exclusive to just these vehicles. Naturally, this begs the question, what does Subaru add to its Wilderness vehicles? Well, for context, the automaker’s goal in manufacturing Wilderness vehicles is to create the most capable cars possible, not only for the road but also off the road. In other words, they truly want these vehicles to be the perfect companions for any possible expeditions, wherever your sense of adventure might take you.
To quote Subaru, “Every Wilderness model is specifically engineered for off-road exploring with upgrades to its ground clearance, drivetrain, and all-terrain capabilities, along with rugged exterior styling and a high-tech cabin that’s as comfortable as it is practical. Because it’s a Subaru, you can trust it to get you places you never could reach before – and to bring you safely back home.” Like we said, any car equipped with a Wilderness badge was built to fuel your sense of adventure.
Now, without further ado, what does Subaru add to its Wilderness vehicles to make them so special? In terms of features, every Subaru Wilderness model comes equipped with Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, all-terrain tires, a front skid plate, redesigned bumpers, a re-tuned suspension, revised gear ratios, Enhanced dual-function X-MODE, water-resistant StarTex upholstery, upgraded roof rails, nine or more inches of ground clearance, and so much more. Furthermore, as for accessories, standard and available assets include a glare-reducing hood decal, black exterior trim with Anodized Copper finish accents, matte black alloy wheels, exterior cladding, LED interior and cargo-area lighting, exclusively available Geyser Blue exterior paint, and, of course, the Wilderness badging on the interior and exterior.

Why Would the Crosstrek Get a Wilderness Badge?
Now, you may be wondering, why would the Crosstrek get a wilderness badge? Well, our story begins with a recent post from Subaru of America. In it, the automaker posted the picture below with the following caption: “There’s an all-new member of the Subaru Wilderness family out there, and it’s heading to the New York International Auto Show. With all-terrain upgrades, rugged style, and trusted safety, Subaru Wilderness vehicles bring the legendary capability of Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive to a whole new frontier of adventure, and we’ll be streaming the reveal live from the auto show.”
As exciting as this is, nowhere in the post does it specifically say Crosstrek. So, once again, why would the Crosstrek get a wilderness badge? Well, if we go through a simple process of elimination, we will quickly see that the Crosstrek is the most plausible vehicle to receive a Wilderness badge. That said, let’s take a closer look at all the models on the Subaru lineup.
First and foremost, the Outback and Forester already have Wilderness badges, so we know it won’t be them. Next, we don’t expect any of the following models to receive a Wilderness edition anytime soon: WRX, Legacy, Impreza, or BRZ. This leaves us with three possibilities: the Ascent, Solterra, and Crosstrek. While the Ascent is certainly a sturdy SUV, we’re afraid it’s a bit too bulky for the off-road capability that normally comes with a Wilderness badge. Similarly, the all-electric Solterra would be a very unexpected choice, especially when you factor in the EV’s need to plug in and recharge, which wouldn’t be ideal in an off-road setting.
With all of that in mind, it quickly becomes evident that the Subaru Crosstrek is the best candidate for the job. With its small and compact size, the Crosstrek is a bit more inclined towards a quick, sporty, and dynamic driving experience – just as one would expect from a Wilderness vehicle. Furthermore, for the 2024 model year, the Subaru Crosstrek is all-new, making this a perfect time to roll out a brand-new Wilderness trim level for it. And, last but not least, the Crosstrek was the best-selling Subaru of 2022. Of course, it only makes sense if the automaker wants to further invest in its best-selling model. Suffice it to say, in our estimation, it simply has to be the Crosstrek!
