Introducing the 2026 Subaru Outback and Outback Wilderness

For the past 30 years, the Subaru Outback has defined how we see the world. It is a go-anywhere vehicle that over three million owners have fallen in love with. It also has the highest retention rate for Subaru, with owners trading in their old one for a newer one several times over.

At the New York International Auto Show this past April, an all-new 2026 Outback was unveiled to the world. While larger than before, it still retains its original mission to go anywhere you want to be.

2026 Subaru Outback

Size-wise, it is larger. It retains a lot of what you love about the Outback, which speaks to the practicality Subaru knows you want, but even more so. It does so with more presence up front, leading to a stronger and bolder profile towards the rear.

The roofline has increased by two inches. A taller roofline translates into a larger cargo area—an increase of two cubic feet compared to the outgoing model’s 34.6 cubic feet. Another advantage of the taller roofline is an improvement in headroom. More importantly, the cabin is quieter due to improved aerodynamics outside, reducing wind noise inside.

The front end has a more upright appearance with a larger grille and more body color elements framing an advanced LED lighting signature. The 2026 Outback retains a rugged look throughout. For the first time ever, you can get an Outback with 19-inch wheels.

Inside, you will see a lot of new-to-Subaru elements that elevate the 2026 Outback. A new 12.3-inch full digital instrument cluster can be personalized to the information you need. That also includes several screen views, including an EyeSight mode. That mode shows you a camera view of what’s up ahead. It can also show you a map view, including inputs from Apple Maps.

A new 12.1-inch STARLINK infotainment touchscreen is mounted on top of the center stack. It is powered by a new processor that will be more responsive and allow for more customization to your needs. That includes a cloud-based voice recognition system, while still giving you wireless smartphone connectivity for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Subaru also separated the climate controls from the screen for tactile buttons and knobs for ease of use.

Similar to the outgoing model, the 2026 Outback offers two engines. A 180-horsepower 2.5-liter BOXER four-cylinder engine gives you confident power with better efficiency. XT and Wilderness models still get the 260-horsepower 2.4-liter turbocharged BOXER engine. The Lineartronic continuously variable transmission, the Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system, and X-MODE are still standard on all Outback models.

Along with the Outback and XT models, a Wilderness model has been added for greater capability and ruggedness. The details are enhanced with specific grille, cladding, and enhanced details throughout. While Outback and XT models ride on a ground clearance that is 8.7 inches off the surface, the Wilderness raises it to 9.5 inches with a set of 17-inch alloy wheels running all-terrain tires.

One thing that has not changed is Outback’s commitment to keeping you safe and secure. The latest EyeSight Driver Assist Technology delivers a suite of features designed to keep you on the road and safe from harm. This is enhanced with a new set of cameras, radar, and sensors for a better, more secure drive anywhere you go. It will also protect you from any incidents involving cyclists and pedestrians. You can even drive hands-free, thanks to enhanced features that lock you into a lane and confidently go around a turn.
