Car and Driver Names Three Subaru Models to its 2025 Editor’s Choice List
Finding someone more of an automobile expert than an editor for Car and Driver isn’t easy. These individuals drive, evaluate, and compare many vehicles every year. So, with great pride, Ewing Subaru of Plano announces that three Subaru models have been named to the 2025 Car and Driver Editor’s Choice List. The winners include the Outback, Crosstrek, and BRZ.
The list is based on an evaluation of nearly 500 different models. The publication’s editors drove most of these models for days, rigorously tested them, and often compared them to their peers. Car and Driver then divided the industry into 45 market segments and declared the winning vehicles for each segment.
“The Editor’s Choice award lets consumers quickly cut through the confusion of the new-car market to help them focus on the vehicles they should seriously consider buying. Think of Editor’s Choice as the honor roll of the new-car world,” according to Car and Driver.
The segments the winning Subaru vehicles represent are:
- 2025 Subaru Crosstrek – Compact SUV
- 2025 Subaru Outback – Station Wagon
- 2025 Subaru BRZ – Affordable Sports Car
The Outback, admittedly, is one of the few station wagons still available to the American consumer, particularly without a European luxury badge and price. However, the Outback is far more capable than an ordinary wagon. As with most Subaru model lines, Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive is standard, and the 8.7-inch ground clearance is very high for the class, rising to 9.5 inches for the Wilderness model. With its effective X-Mode drive mode selector, the Outback beats most crossovers at their own game. The positives Car and Driver found in the Outback include: “Comfortable cabin with wagon practicality, standard all-wheel drive, some off-road chops.” Their summary of the model or ”Verdict” in their words was “Blending a crunchy, off-road flavored personality with a spacious interior and decent road manners, the Outback is a jack-of-most-trades at a reasonable price.”
The Crosstrek began with the already capable Impreza hatch and was given the “Outback treatment,” like the Crosstrek, it manages to beat the dedicated models in its subcompact crossover segment. The things Car and Driver like about the Crosstrek are
“Above-average off-road capability, most models are good on gas, road-trip friendly front seats.” The verdict of the vehicle was summarized as: “Subaru’s small SUV prioritizes chunky looks and all-around utility over zippy performance and driver involvement, but its laid-back demeanor is easy to live with.”
The BRZ stands out as the only Subaru that doesn’t offer all-wheel drive. That is because the BRZ’s goal is to offer classic sports car dynamics that make it “Genuinely rewarding to drive.” Car and Driver also noted that the car was “one of the last manuals available” and “remarkably affordable.” Their summary of the BRZ is: “The BRZ brings driving fun and deft handling to the masses and manages decent practicality while it’s at it.”
“We are proud that the Subaru BRZ, Outback, and Crosstrek have been selected as top picks by the experts at Car and Driver, with all three models making the list for the second year in a row,” said Jeff Walters, President and Chief Operating Officer of Subaru of America, Inc. “This recognition proves Subaru’s dedication toward offering affordable vehicles across various segments, built to the highest standards from safety to performance, with the latest technology.”
