Cars.com Puts The 2026 Subaru Outback to Their Child Seat Test

The 2026 Subaru Outback arrived with a larger cabin, thanks to a taller, more squared-off roofline. One advantage of the larger cabin is increased passenger space, especially in the second row of seats. With an increased rear seating area, you can easily fit child seats back there.
Cars.com conducts a series of child seat fitment tests on every vehicle they work with. Using an infant seat, a two-in-one convertible seat, and a booster seat, the Cars.com team tests their tethering and anchoring, as well as the space in which these seats will be fitted. They adjust the front seats to fit a six-foot-tall adult while positioning the infant and booster seats behind the front passenger on the second-row seat. They also placed the booster seat behind the driver’s seat. Since many vehicles – including the 2026 Outback – have a middle seat, the Cars.com team placed the forward-facing convertible seat there. They add the booster and infant seat on each side to see whether three child seats can fit in the second row.

According to Cars.com tests, the 2026 Outback performed very well. They scored “A” grades for the infant seat, rear- and front-facing convertible seat, and their latches. They noted that “an extra anchor in the middle spot for added flexibility.” This makes child seat installation easy.
If you are concerned about how safe your children will be when placed in their safety seats, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety recently conducted a series of crash tests on the 2026 Outback. They rated the tether and anchoring systems in the second tow as “GOOD.” In all, the 2026 Outback received the TOP SAFETY PICK+ designation from the IIHS.

Keeping your family safe and secure is a huge part of the 2026 Outback’s story. Offering a range of trim levels, drivelines, and the rugged, adventurous Wilderness model, this SUV is made for everyone to ride along in comfort. You can be reassured by the standard EyeSight Driver Assist Technologies and the features that are a part of this suite. Not to mention standard Symmetrical all-wheel drive to keep you going through any weather.
When the kids aren’t riding along, you can fit the child seats in the 2026 Outback’s enlarged cargo area.
